In 1975, Ann Garrison and Virginia Holman founded Anderson Co. Humane
Society (AHS) for the sole purpose to serve as an organization committed to
local stray animals. With friends and family, they came together to make an
official organization that would be committed to animal welfare. Membership
grew and the Humane Society was officially incorporated in 1980.
AHS has not only served as a guiding force behind building two animal shelters but
has been providing animal care and welfare services for all animals in Anderson County.
Until January 2007, the Humane Society assisted the county government with animal
control services. With the creation of Anderson Co. Animal Control, the county government
handles all animal control issues. Now, the Humane Society can focus solely on animal
welfare, adoption, education, and other programs for the community.
